Cranes are synonymous with construction work. However due to their size and weight cranes can cause enormous damage to property and injury to workers. Workers can protect themselves against crane accidents by following a few simple safety guidelines:

> Ensure cranes are inspected and serviced regularly and used properly.

> Be aware of overhead power lines while conducting crane work because many fatalities have occurred when part of the crane (boom, load line or load)comes into contact with over-head power lines and shorts electricity to ground.

> Also be aware of pedestrians and ensure proper exclusion zones when cranes are in operation because many incidents happen when workers are struck by the load or are caught inside the swing radius.

> Make sure that workers operating cranes are appropriately qualified and trained to do so.

> Before using the crane, ensure that it is inspected by a competent person and that every part of the crane is in good working order.

> Inspect the rigging before use and never wrap hoist lines around the load.

> Only operate cranes of firm, stable ground and a level surface.

> Fully extend outriggers and barricade accessible areas inside the crane’s swing radius.

> Do not exceed the load capacity while making lifts.

> Raise the load a few inches at a time, then hold, verify capacity/balance and test the brake system before delivering load.

> Never move loads over workers because loads could fall and crush workers below.

> Adhere to the signals and make sure to read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions at all times.
