Resposta do especialista, Eng.º Richard L.Krabbendam*:

Dear Joao,

As far as I know, there are no rules or regulations or Transport requirements. This also applies to Girder bridges, so it all depends on the requirements from Local authorities.

Make sure it has sufficient stability and check the forces on the load and girder bridge

Don't you think that above certain limits of weight, for example 300 t (transformers) we should use girder bridges. I have been reading that in some countries like Germany, they are limiting the weight per axle in 12t, what is obliging the companies to use girder bridges.

Of course, as I mentioned to you, the local authorities tell the transport contractor to what axle line load limits they can go. Indeed in holland and Germany that is limited to approx. 12 ton/axleline. In Holland we must if possible always use a pontoon and transport the heavy loads via our extensive waterway system and roll on/ off nearest to the factory or end destination.

In your country a girder bridge is the best way to spread the load over enough axle lines in order to meet the highway authority requirements. I am sure you are aware of the FAKTOR 5 girder bridge of Goldhofer as well as the Scheuerle girder bridge. Both companies make high tension light weight girder bridges with a load / own weight ratio of 5!

Kind regards,

Richard L.Krabbendam
